Clarksville made the nearly three-hour drive to Munford and eliminated the Cougars from the Class 5A playoffs with a 16-14 victory Friday night in the first round.

Clarksville kept Munford from scoring late in the game with a defensive stand as the Cougars were 10 yards from the go-ahead score. Jamar Carnell scored both of the touchdowns as CHS eliminated Munford for the second straight year.

Clarksville advances to the second round and will play host to Region 7-5A rival Northeast at 7 p.m. next Friday at the Eagles Nest. Northeast beat Clarksville, 44-14, Oct. 2. The Eagles had a bye in the first round.

CHS (5-4) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after an Andrew Irvin field goal in the first quarter. Carnell scored from a yard out in the second quarter and scored again on a 3-yard run with 7:08 left in the half to take a 16-0 lead.

Munford managed to get on the board late in the first half, adding a two-point conversion and trailed 16-8 at halftime. The Cougars (7-4) cut further into the lead with a 90-yard drive that led to a touchdown as CHS' advantage dwindled to 16-14 with 3:02 left in the third quarter.

Both teams traded several possessions in the fourth quarter but Clarksville's defense kept Munford out of the end zone.

Oakland 42, Rossview 0: Facing the No. 1-ranked team in the state in Class 6A and the favorite to capture the state title, Rossview couldn't manage much offense as the Patriots rolled to a shutout victory.

Oakland racked up 382 yards of offense and held Rossview to just 102 yards. Oakland held a 21-0 lead at halftime but scored 21 more points in the third quarter alone. The Patriots (11-0) ran for 263 yards to advance to the second round where they'll face Mt. Juliet.
